An entire generation may have grown up not knowing that Tagore was a multi-faceted artiste -- poet, painter and a singer. Listen to him singing and one notices how well he sings. Jana Gana Mana was written in Bengali by Tagore in 1911 and adopted as the national anthem on January 24, 1950.

However, he composed more than 50 volumes of poetry, including the well-known Gitanjali. He also wrote approximately 2,230 songs and many of his poems have also been set to music by others.

Tagore adapted tunes from different regions all over India – Gujarati, Kannada, Punjabi, Tamil as well as Hindi light music, including Bhajans – and created his own music. These songs are known as Bhanga Gaan (literally meaning 'Broken songs').Aug 6, 2010
