No Magicicada are expected to emerge in 2022. Brood XI would have emerged, but this brood has gone extinct. However, plenty of cicadas emerge off-cycle. These cicadas, known as “stragglers,” can sometimes reach significant densities.

Unlike mosquitoes, the rare bite of a cicada does not contain components of its saliva that function to prevent coagulation of blood; therefore, there is no irritation such as itching and redness that is likely to occur.

While 17 years seems like a long time, this is only the lifespan of one specific type of cicada. Many appear yearly and live their lives for only a summer season.Jan 3, 2022

Most scientists agree that the most likely reason why 17-year cicadas spend so long underground is to avoid predators. By coming to the surface in such a large group, some cicadas get eaten but many cicadas will survive. Predators just don't have enough room in their stomachs for all of the cicadas that pop up!

The noise produced by these grasshoppers is a soft, muffled buzzing sound.

Cicadas are known for the distinctive loud sound that they make. Locusts can produce noise by rubbing their wings together or against their bodies, but the sound doesn't compare to that created by large numbers of cicadas droning together in chorus.Jun 2, 2021

Locusts are far more destructive, as they feed on a variety of plant life. Large swarms of locusts can cause severe damage to croplands. Cicadas don't cause the same level of destruction as locusts.May 9, 2021

Cicadas, during part of their performance, sound very much like the rattling of a rattlesnake. This is not really a mimic, but a sound that can be confused for a rattlesnake. It might even startle you if the insect suddenly starts rattling while you're walking through the desert.
