Eliot's philosophy of time and consciousness develops in three stages. In The Waste Land period, in which man is time-ridden and unconscious, he is unable to confront time and create his own being by reconciling his present with his past or "other".

Eliot's trajectory is from nihilism to Christianity

The despair of Eliot's early poetry reflects the nihilism of secular Europe. Eliot's personal and artistic solution was a cautious Christian faith, most clearly announced in The Journey of the Magi.

The symbolism of the waste land, garden, water, city, stairs, etc., as Eliot expresses the themes of time, death-rebirth, levels of love (and attitude toward women), the quest motif on psychological, metaphysical, and aesthetic levels.

Depersonalization is the action of detaching the personal self from something. In the context of “Tradition and the Individual Talent,” depersonalization is the process the traditional poet goes through to make their poetry less personal and more in keeping with Eliot's Impersonal Theory instead.
